Chapter Summary[]
Lucky's Point of View[]
- Lucky, named Yap at the time, is hunting a shiny green beetle. He pretends he's a Fierce warrior of Lightning. Suddenly, he hears an eerie howl and retreats to his Mother-Dog for comfort. His littermates greet him with a chorus of yips as he squeezes in with his Mother-Dog.
- She comforts him, stating it's a wolf howl but the wolf will not find them nor come. Yap is frightened by the foreignness of the word. His Mother-Dog assures him that wolves were alike dogs, with four legs, paws and teeth. But the main difference between dogs and wolves were that wolves had no honor, and were cunning and crafty.
- Squeak announces that she could outsmart a wolf, but Mother-Dog sternly reminds her that a dog is about honor and to not stoop to a wolf's level of deception. Snip recalls a tale that Mother-Dog told him about Nuzzle and the wolf Greatfang.
- As Yap listens to the story, he feels protected by his Mother-Dog as he hears her heart beating. He falls asleep as she assures him and his littermates to go to sleep and that they'll all be safe. Yap thinks that no matter what, he'll stay away from wolves unlike Nuzzle and always have his life here like this.
