Chapter 8 of 10

Chapter Summary[]

Wolf's point of View[]
Wolf and Calamity are making their way back to the shed after a day of hard work with the other Fierce Dogs. Calamity is padding by his side, and the two are laughing about Zorro let an ewe make a fool of him. As they enter the shed, Wolf walks over to his cushion, waiting for the Rancher to clip his leash to the wall. However, after the longpaw settles SundanceBelle and Zorro, he turns to Wolf and Calamity, barking out a sharp command for them to walk by his side. When Wolf asks Calamity what is happening, she happily tells him that it's his turn to stand guard tonight, which means that the Rancher fully trusts him. Dog's chest swells with pride and he happily accepts a treat from the longpaw before turning to set off patrolling. Before the two can begin, Sundance interrupts them, an unhappy look on his face. He declares that Calamity is in charge, and makes her promise to keep a close on Wolf. Calamity grins at Wolf before the two set off along the fence. They quietly pace between the sheep's pens, sniffing for signs of trouble. As they pause by a meadow fence, Calamity challenges Wolf to a race to the far fence and back. Wolf accepts, sprinting hard, his paws pounding the slick ground. When Wolf rounds the fence he collides with Calamity, and the two tumble onto the ground in a heap. Wolf grabs her neck in his jaws, shaking her playfully until she twists free and grabs his muzzle with hers. After several moments of playfighting, the two collapse onto the ground, laying on their sides together. Wolf says Calamity's name after a moment, a hesitant note in his voice. When the female Fierce Dog asks him what, he licks his lips nervously before admitting that he doesn't know how to say it. After Calamity encourages him, he rushes out the words, confessing that he has never liked another wolf or dog as much as he likes her. Calamity is silent for a moment, before quietly murmuring that she feels the same way. Before Wolf can reply, she meets his eyes and asks him if he ever still thinks about running away. Wolf hesitantly admits it, but promises to stay if Calamity becomes his mate. Before she can reply, there is a sudden eruption of panic squawking from the chicken cages. The two jump up and run, heading for the wire cages. Wolf catches the scent of a coyote, and growls at Calamity to take the yard side. He spots the catch to the gate that had been left carelessly loose, and creeps slowly towards the coyote, who is moving stealthily through the panicking chickens. When Wolf notices how disheveled and starved the coyote is, he hesitates, caught in a moment of sympathy. That hesitation costs him dearly however, as the coyote snatches up a red hen and spots Wolf, shooting past him through the open gate. Wolf leaps after him, but Sundance reaches the creature first, slamming the coyote into the ground before Zorro and Belle join in, their teeth snapping and claws flashing. When the Fierce Dogs back away the coyote is nothing more then a mangled and bloody piece of fur, and Sundance lets out several sharp deep barks, summoning the Rancher, who bursts from the house holding a small light in his paws. Sundance spins around and snarls viciously in Wolf's face, while Belle and Zorro make a circle around him and Calamity. Sundance paces forward and snarls again, telling them how they failed, and must be punished.
