Chapter Summary

Lucky's Point of View

Lucky and Mickey lead the three, unnamed Fierce pups through the forest. Lucky thought about how much longer they'd have to go, and the pups were painfully slow. The female and the large male, Lick and Grunt, encouraged their smaller litter-brother. Lucky wasn't sure how much longer the pups can go. Eventually, Lucky decided they should each carry a pup, while the third walks in between. Mickey said it would be "good training" for the two of them, so the pups agreed. After a while, Lucky heard the larger male's stomach rumble, and wondered what they eat. It is almost no-sun when Lucky said they should stop to rest. They stayed beside a tree. Lucky was about to speak, but his ears pricked as he heard a rustle in a nearby bush. He caught a vole, dividing it between the eager pups. He almost ate some, but mentally scolds himself, thinking about the rabbit he had earlier. The pups curled up together, the older dogs standing next to them. Lucky glanced out to the forest, and says there is an important thing they have to do. He said that they can't move at sun-up until they all have names. He explained that they would get pup-names, but later they would be able to choose their adult names. The smaller pup received the name Wiggle, for his constant moving about. The female was named Lick by Mickey, for her love to give licks. The bigger male grunted that he did not need a pup-name, and Lucky calls him Grunt. Lucky felt more responsible and connected to the pups after he had named them. When they lay down to go to sleep, Wiggle whined, saying he could not fall asleep. Lucky told him to rest his head on his chest, and the pup obeyed, soon falling asleep. Lucky though, stayed awake to listen for signs of danger. A howl echoed in the distance, and the pups began yipping in alarm. Lucky soothed them. telling them that whatever made that noise was far away. Mickey asked what it was in a hushed tone. He asked if it was a wolf, and Lucky said that he hoped not. The howls keep sounding closer and closer, and Mickey said that he could hear lots of them. Lucky said that they must keep moving. Lick asked if they could smell them, and Lucky replied that he did not think so. Wiggle asked if Lucky will leave them, and he promised so stay by him the whole time. He lied, saying that they would find somewhere safe to rest. Lucky thought it smelled like wolf, and fox, but neither at the same time. Mickey stopped, saying that Wiggle is falling behind. Lick said he is tired, as none of them were used to walking that far. Lucky begun to carry Wiggle, and told Mickey to act as his eyes and ears. They soon hear nasty, unfamiliar voices, and Lucky realized they are coyotes. The coyotes sniffed around, saying that they could smell pup-treats. Lucky told everyone to stay quiet. Mickey asked if he thought they could outrun them, but was silenced by Lucky quickly, as he did not want the pups to hear the word "coyote". Mickey blinked in understanding. Lucky and the rest tried to lose them, but Mickey realized that it would not work. Lucky said they should hide, but Grunt protested, saying that a Fierce dog never hides. Mickey rolled in the dirt and mulch to hide his scent. He told the rest to do the same. They did that, then huddled together, trying to hide. Grunt said that he wouldn't hide, and Lucky told him that he was very brave, but it wasn't the time for bravery. They heard the coyotes talking about ways to eat the pups, and even Grunt hid.
