Chapter Summary[]
Storm's Point of View[]
Storm paces back and forth as Sweet gives birth. Lucky's panic scent worries Storm. Moon is with Sweet, helping her as Sweet gives birth. Dart snaps at Storm to sit down. Dart says that Storm is driving every dog crazy. Storm knows that Dart is only a scout dog and that she can't tell Storm what to do. But Storm knows that Dart is right. Storm then lies down in a shady area by the hunters den.
As Sweet gives another loud howl, Storm wishes she could rush to her leader's aid. But she knew there was nothing she could do for Sweet. Storm wanted to just get up and leave camp. She wishes she had volunteered to go on the patrol with Thorn and Beetle even though she was a hunter. Storm felt trapped between Whisper's grave and the pup's den, between the end of death and the beginning of life.
Storm felt as if the Spirit Dogs wanted her to do something, but she doesn't know what to do. Storm suddenly smells an overwhelming fear-scent as Lucky trots over to her. He was panting as if he had been chasing a deer and his eyes were wild and bright. Sweet's howls still rang through the air. Storm leaps to her paws and asks Lucky what's wrong and if Sweet is okay.
More dogs begin to rush toward Lucky. Mickey asks if they can help. Lucky said that Sweet was doing well, but Moon made him leave. He then says that everything is happening as Moon said it should and that they just had to wait.
