Alpha's Tale[]

When Pup stalks at a weasel, the prey hungrily sniffs around a rabbit burrow. After catching it, Pup takes the weasel to Graceful, who holds a white rabbit beneath a paw. When they return to camp, Graceful lets him take both pieces of prey so to the prey-store, and she drops her rabbit and nudges in toward her sun. Pup is happy as he places both pieces of prey on the pile.
When Quick and Pup talk, Pup recalls how his belly was so tight that he was only able to gulp down half a rabbit. During his Naming Ceremony, Alpha tears open the white rabbit and flays it of its skin. She lays her pup on the pelt and waits for Pup to sit on it. When the Pack chooses Pup's name to be Dog, the half-wolf is angry, and the white rabbit fur beneath him gleams in the moonlight, but seems like a practical joke. Pup looks down at the empty eye sockets, and imagines that they sneer that it died so that Pup would be called Dog. When Dog confronts Quick, he notices that the moonlight no longer shines on the discarded, crumpled, and dirty gray rabbit pelt.
After being captured by The Rancher, Dog eats the food in the bowl, and thinks that it is unlike deer or rabbit, and tastes strange. Later, after Wolf leaves the Longpaw Fangs and wanders alone, he sniffs a rabbit by a patch of thorns, but when he springs for it, it dodges and flees and cunningly zigzags until he is forced to abandon the chase. He thinks that if he had a Pack, there would have been another wolf to flank the rabbit, block it, and drive it back to him.
